In November 2016, Larwood Academy Trust was formed, initially comprising the newly academised SEMH Larwood School in Stevenage, which had already established a clear pathway for providing swift and appropriate support for the young people it served.

In 2018, the Trust was commissioned to provide outreach and inreach support for primary schools in Stevenage. In November 2019, the concept of a ‘school within a school’, known as Space Hub, was established to support the specific needs of autistic pupils.

In February 2020, Brandles School, a secondary SEMH provision in Baldock, joined the Trust.

In September 2024,  Larwood School opened its Pathways provision, supporting children who were out of school and experiencing difficulties securing a school placement.

In January 2025, the Trust formally changed its name to Brighter Futures Educational Trust.

In December 2025, the Trust opened its first satellite provision for Larwood School in Dunstable.
